Tax Planning

Home » Tax Planning

Most people prefer to keep their tax liabilities to a minimum, and that is where MAP Wealth Management can help.

Effective tax planning does not rely on complex or “ingenious” formulas; instead, it is built on a thorough understanding of current legislation and how it applies to your specific situation. We focus on proactive planning to ensure you are as tax-efficient as possible, entirely within the bounds of the law.

There are three primary taxes you may encounter during your lifetime:

Income Tax

This is a tax on the money you earn. It typically applies to your salary or wages, but it also covers business profits, rental income, certain benefits, and interest or dividends from your savings and investments. Most individuals are entitled to a tax-free personal allowance, meaning you only pay tax on income that exceeds this threshold.

Capital Gains Tax (CGT)

This tax applies when you sell, gift, or exchange an asset that has increased in value. It is important to note that you are taxed only on the profit (the gain) you make, not the total amount you receive from the sale. The gain is calculated by subtracting the original cost of the asset from the sale price. As with income tax, there are annual allowances available that can help reduce your liability.

Inheritance Tax (IHT)

This tax may be due on your estate after your death if its value exceeds certain thresholds (known as the nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band). Assets passed to a spouse, civil partner, or charity are generally exempt. The standard rate is 40% on the value above the threshold. While some lifetime gifts are subject to specific rules—such as the seven-year rule for “Potentially Exempt Transfers”—there are various exemptions and planning strategies available to help manage your estate’s liability.
